What is ESOS?
The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme is a mandatory UK government programme requiring large businesses to carry out comprehensive energy audits every four years. If your organisation employs 250 or more people, or has an annual turnover exceeding £44 million, you're required to comply. ESOS Phase 3 is now in effect, and the Environment Agency is actively enforcing compliance.
Who Needs to Comply?
Any UK undertaking that meets at least one of the following thresholds in a qualifying period: 250 or more employees, annual turnover exceeding £44 million, or an annual balance sheet total exceeding £38 million. Group structures are assessed at the highest parent level, which means subsidiary companies may qualify even if they wouldn't individually.
What's Involved?
An ESOS assessment covers your total energy consumption across buildings, industrial processes, and transport. A qualified Lead Assessor must sign off the audit, which identifies energy saving opportunities across your operations. The assessment doesn't require you to implement the recommendations, but it must be thorough enough to identify realistic, costed opportunities.
